Munchkin: The kitten that melted hearts
When an abandoned litter of kittens was taken to the RSPCA in Milton Keynes volunteers realised at once that all was not well with its smallest member.
Munchkin, as he became known, was much smaller than his brother and sisters with no tail and only one eye. To add to Munchkin’s troubles, he was also struggling to eat properly.
Vets soon identified the problem as a congenital abnormality of the blood vessels of the heart called persistent right aortic arch. The RSPCA had two choices; put Munchkin down or pay for the operation that could save his life.
But it wasn’t that simple. Even with an offer from Milton Keynes Veterinary Group to reduce the cost of the operation to £1200, with over 150 other cats and kittens to care for it was still too much to spend on just 1 kitten.
There was only one hope. That the people of Milton Keynes could be persuaded to dig deep and save Munchkin. Well dig deep they did and on Thursday 16th October Munchkin underwent a successful operation and is now recovering well. A fabulously fluffy ending for a brave kitten and a caring community
